On October 8th, 2023, 23-year old Kelvin Kiptum broke the world marathon record by becoming the first human to run under 2 hours and 1 minute at the Chicago Marathon in a time of 2:00:35. As someone who was going to run the marathon until a stress fracture sidelined me only 2 weeks before the race, I decided to still go and follow Kelvin throughout his race. Six months later, Kelvin died in a car accident in his home country of Kenya, leaving this race as his final legacy, but not without inspiring the world with what he proved could be achieved. On April 6th, 2026, Sebastian Sawe would break Kelvin's record and run 1:59:30 at the London Marathon. These images not only aim to capture Kelvin's historic run, but tell the story of the city he ran through that day.
